Family Halloween Costumes

How many years will my kids agree to do family Halloween costumes? I’ll take it for as many as they’ll give me!

If I’m being honest, dressing up and coordinating Halloween costumes can be a lot of work. However, looking back on all these photos, I’m so happy to have put in the extra effort to make these memories with them!

A few things that

  • Find something that our family is currently interested in. For us, it is usually driven by our boys — often, it’s a show or video game. We always ask for their input and try toget everyone on board. It will be fun to see what themes come up as they grow older!

  • Most years we buy our costumes, but my favorites are the years we have been able to make them. It’s been even more fun when the kids get to help make them too!

  • Before buying costumes, we always ask around to see if poeple are getting rid of or selling anything that fits our theme. I’ve also gotten pretty lucky getting cheap costumes at consignments stores if I know our theme early enough.

OK, now for a little stroll through Halloweens past!

Costume Theme: Star Wars!

We recently started watching the original Star Wars movies as a family and our kids really got into it!

Costume Theme: Number Blocks!

Our boys have loved this show over the years and it had a comeback as they introduced it to Maren. We MADE all of these number blocks out of cardboard and paint!

Costume Theme: Super Mario Brothers

Ah, the year we introduced that classic game of our childhood to our kids. I feel like the characters everyone chose represents them well. That Mario belly on Asher. And Mom clearly controls it all.

Costume Theme: Fruit Ninja!

Did anyone else’s kids play this game? Our boys loved it. (Also maybe because it was the only video-like game we had on our ipad?) The boys are ninjas and the rest of us are fruit. Slice away!

Costume Theme: Ghostbusters & Halloween things

Ha. This was Covid year and we struggled a bit (didn’t we all?). I grabbed these Ghostbuster costumes for the boys and the rest of us went from there. I’m a witch, Maren’s a black cat and Todd is a mummy.

Costume Theme: Robots

This was the year that started the WHOLE family matching & still one of my favorites. We spent many nights painting boxes &  glueing on knobs to the front of those robots. They boys helped too!

Costume Theme: Wild Animals!

This theme wasn’t hard to pull off. Bonus is that those costumes kept the boys warm!

Costume Theme: A monkey and his banana!

This was he year that themed costumes were born. The brothers have always been buddies so it made since to make them a pair this first year Asher was around.(Notice Asher used this monkey costume the next year?)
